Palette 101: What to look for as a consumer

Palettes are a staple in every beauty guru’s arsenal. I may or may not have a bit of an obsession 😛 So let’s talk about why palettes are so amazing and what to look for.

First off, what are palettes and why are they so popular?

Palettes are a collection of beauty products that are grouped together with a certain theme. The colors are thought out by the creator and intentionally packaged collectively, hence the popularity. The most common palettes are eyeshadow collections. You will sometimes see shadows paired with a blush, highlight, etc. Some company do palettes of just blush, contour or highlights. Below are a few examples of different products, sizes, companies, etc.

What should I look for when purchasing a palette?

The most important factors are proformance and price. Obviously you want a product that works but also doesn’t break the bank. Dividing deeper into it, I do ask myself some specific questions before purchasing:

Can I do a full look with this palette alone? Is there enough variety of color and textures?

This is more for convenience; especially when traveling, it’s nice to be able to just grab one palette instead of a handful of individual colors. My favorite thing EVER is when a palette has a black, a white and a transitional shade along side a variety of fun colors. I like having those specific colors available since I use them in pretty much ever style.

As for textures, I prefer having a palette with both matte and shimmery options. The reason being, I very rarely would do an eye look with shimmery shades only. I love using different textures to create dimension.

A great palette for beginners is the Lorac Lust & Lace Palette (pictured above). This only comes with a few shades but they are the perfect basic color to start out with. This is an example of a high end product that is still affordable!

If you were to splurge on just one palette around $50, these two are fantastic finds! You can do a ton of color combinations and they have all your basics (black, white and tan).

How is the quality of the packaging?

Packing is super important when it comes to palettes!  You are receiving more than one product, so if an item breaks, you’ll likely ruin your other shades of color! Make sure your palette come in a case that is easy to handle, closes completely (I’ve had  a few disasters with cases that don’t completely close), and if it has a mirror, that’s always a plus!

Last but not least, is it worth the price?

Think about how many colors you’re recieveing for the price. Most of the indivisible shadows I owe run from $6-20 per pot. The palettes I own range from around $9-70. So if you’re getting a large variety of colors it’s probably worth it!

This is 100% opinion based, as every consumer is different. If you guys different opinions or recommendations leave it in the comments, I would love to hear! I hope this was helpful for anyone looking to branch out in their collections.
